I always bring blended essential oils to my classes as you beautiful yogis know.

Although there is little published research on the effects of essential oils, they have been used therapeutically for centuries. For example,

– lavender, geranium, jasmine and chamomile for calming the mind and reducing stress.
– rosemary, peppermint and basil, for improving mental focus.
– lemon, grapefruit, bergamot and frankincense for lifting the mood.

We do know that our sense of smell and emotions are inextricably linked, as described in this NY Times article,  “the nose is an emotional time machine”.  A smell can immediately transport us to a special moment or place.  Positive reinforcement then of meditative movement linked with a specific smell should help us to settle into our practice each time we come to our mat.

It is worth noting that not every essential oil will have the same effect on every person.  Lavender, far from calming, may agitate some people.  So you are always welcome to choose a different blend or pass altogether!

……..and most importantly, I use oils to bring students right into the great ocean of NOW. We can only experience our senses in the present.  So, we are practising mindfulness.
